Effective Home Remedies for Earaches
There are many possible causes of earaches. Earaches may not be severe but they are definitely painful and it can affect daily activities. In the case of ear infection, managing the pain should be the focus. Here are some home remedies that you can do to relieve earaches.
Warm or Hot Compress
The best method to relieve ear pain is by preparing a warm compress. Simply soak a clean washcloth, drain excess water then apply it to the affected ear. You can also use a warmed gel pad or heating pad.
Steam helps open and relax airways of the ear. Taking a warm shower or bath may help relieve the pain. Also, a humidifier helps in relaxing pain in the ear.
Arranging your sleeping position may help relieve pain. Sleeping upright, with the affected ear raised, can help the ear drain fluid build-up. Adding extra pillows and sleeping with your head elevated relieves pain and drains the fluid faster.
Ear pain can occasionally be related to a sore throat. Gargling salt water can sometimes help relieve a sore throat and ear pain. Salt has the ability to reduce swelling and inflammation.
Applying hydrogen peroxide mixture to the ear helps drain the fluid faster. To use this as a remedy, combine a mixture of ear drops and equal parts of vinegar and water. Use a dropper and drip the liquid into the affected ear. Make sure to equally measure the mixture from a 1 to 1 ratio.
Essential oils contain antibacterial and antiviral properties that help kill bacteria and viruses from an ear infection. You can use essential oils to relieve ear pain by mixing drops of essential oil with drops of olive oil or water. Soak a cotton ball and apply it in the opening of the affected ear. Tea tree oil, oregano oil, basil oil, and garlic oil are some of the essential oils.
Chewing gums helps “pop” and reduce pressure in the ear. This is effective if you are experiencing pain after swimming or traveling on an airplane.

- Trying a warm compress helps reduce pain in the ear. Do this for about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Ear drops with extracts of ingredients such as garlic, lavender, calendula, and St. John’s wort helps relieve inflammation and pain for children. You can combine any of these homeopathic ear drops with olive oil for effective use.
- Adjust your child’s sleeping position by adding two pillows on the head. This helps improve fluid drainage in the ear caused by infection.
